Protecting the Capital: Leveraging a Notification System for Coordination and Response

Sulayman Brown of Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management has over seventeen (17) years’ experience in Emergency Management, crisis management, planning, development and training services for Emergency services organizations.  These experiences have been developed at the National as well as international level in providing disaster preparation, mitigation,  response and recovery assistance.  He worked for the Office of Foreign Disaster (OFDA) within the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for over eleven (11) years.  Job titles and functions included; Communications Manager, OFDA; responsible for advising members of Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DART) in foreign countries in effort’s to provide operational and disaster assistance.  Countries  include Indonesia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kosovo, Albania, Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, etc.  Currently he resides as the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Manager for Fairfax County, Virginia; he helped implement the transition from Emergency Support Functions (ESF) management to the Incident Command System (ICS) organization within the Fairfax County EOC.  This process prepares for activations and senior level support for public safety personnel and local residents.
